What attracted you to Sloan Group?
I joined Sloan Group because I was interested in learning and applying my skills in a small firm with big client focus. I joined the firm full-time in September 2017 after completing an internship here in 2016. I really enjoy the environment here at work because the teams are flexible and there is a genuine opportunity for learning. There is a collective approach to work between the experienced partners, managers and staff that is very effective because it helps ensure the quality of work done. I returned full-time to learn more from the Sloan Management team because of the high quality of work and excellent client satisfaction.
What is your main accounting focus?
The majority of my work involves financial statement preparation and corporate tax filings.
During tax season, I also had the opportunity to work on some personal tax and a few small audits in the financial services industry. The amount of variation in the work as I move through the week is very appealing to me. I hope to gain more experience in tax and learn more audits going forward so I can decide which area I should specialize in.
Tell us about your education?
I graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University (WLU) in Waterloo, Ontario with a Bachelor of Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting. I also have minors in Financial Mathematics and Economics.
What has your experience been like with Sloan Partners?
Overall the experience has been exceptional. I’ve learned so much working with different managers with diverse areas of expertise. I feel challenged every day, and I like that. With every client comes a different challenge – it’s like solving a puzzle!
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
I would say being able to work through a client’s file and see the final result is the most rewarding thing. It’s very satisfying to see that your efforts have saved the client money and/or put them on a path for growth.
What made you decide to become an accounting/tax professional?
I have always enjoyed math, and the practicality of using those math skills in the business world was appealing to me. I was taking courses in accounting even before starting university. I enjoyed the work, so I decided to go to Laurier for BBA.
What is your favorite thing about your chosen profession?
There are so many niches that you can become an expert in within tax and audit. You can have specific expertise, and others in the profession will have other skills. There is so much flexibility in this professional career path, whether I choose to focus on tax or auditor some other area of expertise.
What are your long-term plans?
My immediate focus is working toward my CPA. Once I achieve that goal, I’ll see what opportunities present and which ones I want to pursue.
Do you have any hobbies or special interests outside of the office that you’d like to share?
I enjoy watching and playing sports. I’m an adamant Toronto sports fan and follow the Raptors, Leafs, Blue Jays and Toronto FC. I recently took up Yoga and am learning to sail this summer.
